Charity begins at home

Charity begins at home. Do you believe in this proverb?

An excerpt from my book ‘Story time with proverbs’.

‘Charity is when we do something for the other person out of goodwill and do not expect anything in return.’

Story time with proverbs

Nowadays, charity has lost its true meaning and purpose. It is all about flaunting personal wealth and gaining social media followers. Not everyone but the majority is doing it for this reason.

This Coronavirus lockdown shattered many homes. Many lost their jobs and loved ones. And many Samaritans came forward to help the people in need.

But, we also witnessed many incidents where people took pics of them donating and uploading them on social media. For a few, it was just a social media show-off. Do they ever think how the person receiving the things would be feeling to be photographed in such conditions?

Cycle of dependency

In my personal opinion, we all are dependent on someone one way or the other. If we take care of the ones depending on us, that should be enough. Like if the big companies paid their employees on time, they would further be able to pay their maids, drivers, school fees etc. on time. And so, the cycle goes on. And the ones who don’t come in this cycle can gain from a charity.

But this needs to be discussed in depth. Everyone should behave sensibly.

If the company is suffering losses, they might try to provide as much as they can if not full salary.

What is the use of doing charity and flaunting on social media if we can’t support the ones who are directly dependent on us? Charity begins at home by helping the ones who are dependent on us.

“Help the ones who are directly dependent on us. If everyone ensures this, there will be less misery in the world.”

Charity amount can be small for our friends and they might laugh at us. But its actual worth is known to the person receiving it.

In my first book, there is this story that teaches about the importance of charity. I feel it is essential to teach our kids about helping the ones who depend on us first.
